Introduction: The Power of Clear Conversations

In this episode of The Soul Career® Podcast, leadership coach Felecia Williams dives into one of the most overlooked skills in leadership: distinguishing conversations and listening actively.

Many leaders assume that speaking well or having a strong opinion is enough to lead effectively. Felecia challenges this assumption by showing that clarity, attentiveness, and distinction in dialogue are what truly build trust and collaboration.

Through personal stories, practical tools, and relatable examples, Felecia uncovers how even small misalignments in conversation can derail decision-making, create tension, and block growth and how leaders can correct course.

Why Distinctions Matter in Leadership Conversations

Felecia explains that misunderstandings in conversation often arise when:

  • We assume our definition of a word or phrase matches everyone else’s.

  • We jump in eager to share our viewpoint without understanding the other person’s perspective.

  • We operate on different levels — one person zoomed in on details, another on the big picture.

These misalignments can make a discussion feel like a disagreement, even when both parties share the same overall goal.

“Sometimes we’re on the same topic but not on the same point,” Felecia notes. “If you don’t slow down and name it, the conversation can go in circles.”
In the workplace, these mismatches happen frequently in meetings, one-on-ones, and cross-team discussions, causing frustration and slowing down progress.

The Listening Challenge Leaders Face

Even experienced leaders often struggle to listen effectively. Felecia identifies three common traps:

  1. Planning your response while someone is speaking – This prevents you from hearing most of what’s being said.

  2. Getting excited to share your point – Enthusiasm can unintentionally drown out others’ voices.

  3. Assuming you already know – Completing someone’s sentence or jumping to conclusions can lead to misunderstanding.

These habits may seem small, but over time, they erode trust, weaken relationships, and limit growth.

Tools to Lead Better Conversations

Felecia shares three practical strategies leaders can implement immediately to improve clarity and build trust:

  1. Pause and Clarify – Ask questions like, “When you say performance, do you mean sales numbers or customer experience?” This small step prevents misalignment before it grows.

  2. Reinstate with Precision – Instead of broadly agreeing, specify: “I agree with your point about sales performance, but I see customer service differently.” It keeps conversations clear and constructive.

  3. Zoom In and Out – Identify the level of discussion — big picture vs. details. Explicitly stating this can prevent talking past each other.

These habits create productive dialogue, foster understanding, and reinforce trust across teams.

Lead Through Listening

Even self-described “talkers” like Felecia remind us that the most powerful leaders often lead through listening rather than speaking.

“If you notice your voice is the loudest in the room, pause. Give others a chance to share. Listening is the most powerful gift you can offer,” she says.

Effective leadership isn’t about dominating conversations; it’s about guiding them with clarity, distinction, and empathy. When done well, it strengthens relationships, encourages collaboration, and boosts organizational success.
